Gilbert Fayl <gilbert.fayl@european-academy.at>

His current key activities include the responsibility for the Central- and Eastern European Network, a platform for informal dialogue among the Presidents of national Academies of Sciences from the countries in Central- and Southeast Europe.

He is the Founding President of the Central- and Southeast European Innovation Area (CEIA) initiative and the co-Founding President of the Central- and Southeast European Research, Innovation and Business Network (RIBN). These non-political initiatives aim to help revitalise the innovation potential of Central- and Southeast European region.

Previously he has worked at the European Commission in science policy for 28 years. In the 1980s, at the Headquarters in Brussels, he was a member of the core team responsible for the initiation and conceptual formulation of the European RTD Framework Programmes. Subsequently he has been S&T and Education Counsellor at the Commission’s Delegation to the USA in Washington D.C. (responsible for the co-ordination of EC-US S&T agreements’ negotiations), and, back at the Headquarters, Head of RTD Programme Evaluation (responsible for the overall annual monitoring and periodic 5-year assessment of the EU RTD programmes) and Head of Relations with Scientific Advisory Bodies (responsible for the establishment and initial co-ordination of the European Research Advisory Board, EURAB).

He has a Ph.D. in physical sciences.
