History

The University of New York in Skopje (UNYS) opened its doors to Macedonian students in 2005, following a very successful three year presence of the New York College Skopje, the fifth campus of the NYC Educational Group. UNYS has recently acquired accreditation from the Macedonian Ministry of Education and Science. In October 2005, UNYS opened its new state-of-the-art campus near the Centre for Sport and Recreation in Saraj, Skopje. Today, students at UNYS have the option to study for accredited and prestigious bachelor and master degrees in a variety of majors.

The Campus

The campus is beautifully laid out on a 4000 m2 picturesque and landscaped locale. Newly remodeled, the attractive university buildings include a large amphitheater, classrooms, computer labs, a library, study rooms, faculty and administrative offices, a cafeteria/restaurant, and student dormitories. It is a truly safe and relaxing study environment, allowing students to concentrate on their studies but also to liberally mingle with their peers. The campus also supports outdoor activities and sports facilities.

Mission

The mission of the University of New York in Skopje is to offer students the opportunity to obtain a university degree at the Bachelor’s or Master’s level in a variety of academic and professional specializations; to provide them with the theoretical knowledge and applied skills, and confidence necessary to pursue a

wide range of career paths and succeed in a diverse international work environment; and to prepare them to become pro-active and productive citizens of the world community.

Degree Requirements

• Completion of 128 academic credits or 256 ECTS credits that include required General Education courses, required courses in the major/concentration, SUNY, Empire State College courses and elective courses.

• A minimum cumulative Grade Point Average (GPA) of 2.00 equivalent to a letter grade of C.

Program Structure

The program is designed to be completed in four years and leads to the award of an accredited degree from the State University of New York, Empire State College or an accredited degree from the University of New York in Skopje.

The academic year is divided into two semesters: Fall and Spring. Classes meet for 15 weeks and students typically enrol in 5 courses each semester; however, students may take a reduced number of classes to accommodate their work schedules. Final examinations are taken in each course at the conclusion of the

semester. A six-week summer session may be offered depending on student demand.

Study Options

Students may choose from one of two study options to complete their Bachelor’s Degree.

1. State University of New York, Empire State College Bachelor’s Degree

Students complete their first 3 years of study at the University of New York in Skopje and their last year of study at one of the NYC Educational Group branch campuses in Athens, Thessalonica, Prague or Tirana. The Bachelor’s Degree will be awarded by the State University of New York. Approval to offer the fourth year of SUNY, Empire State College courses in Skopje is currently in process.

2. University of New York in Skopje Bachelor’s Degree

Students may complete four years of study in Skopje. The Bachelor’s Degree will be awarded by the University of New York in Skopje which is recognized and accredited by the Ministry of Education and Science in the Republic of Macedonia. The full application of the Bologna Agreement and transformation of the studies according to the principles established with it is currently in process.

Application Requirements

Admission to the program is competitive. Following items are necessary to be considered for admission to UNYS.

•Completed application form, including application letter

•High school/secondary school diploma

•Certified copy of high school transcript

•English language test with a minimum TOEFL score of 530 written or 197 electronic

•Admissions interview with program representative

Application Procedure

The following items may be submitted by or in-person. Once UNYS receives all

documents you will be invited to the campus for an interview.

• Completed application form, including letter of application

• Certified copy of high school or secondary school diploma

• Certified copy of high school transcript

• Copy of passport/ID

• TOEFL score of 530 or above

• 6 passport-size photographs

Transfer students are required to submit following additional documents:

• Certified copies of transcript and grades from all higher education institutions

attended (if not in English, certified English translations must be provided).

• Course descriptions for all courses translated into English.

Financial Assistance and Scholarships

”Boris Trajkovski Scholarship”- Each year UNYS awards two full scholarships to high school graduates to honor our late President Boris Trajkovski.

Academic Excellence Scholarship - Up to five scholarships awarded to UNYS students who have achieved the highest grades in the previous academic year.

Payment Calendars - Students have the option to pay their tuition and fees in instalments.

Accreditation

The University of New York in Skopje is accredited by the Ministry of Education

and Science in the Republic of Macedonia Decision No. 12-6006/2.
